Bản Hồ is a Tày village about 30 km south-west of Sapa, an hour and a half by car down the mountain to where the Mường Hoa and La Ve streams meet. It is several hundred metres lower than the town and noticeably warmer, 18–25 °C when Sapa is in cloud, with wooden stilt houses along the water, rice on the valley floor and pools in the river deep enough to swim in, which is rare anywhere else around Sapa. Since 1 July 2025 the Bản Hồ commune also includes the former Thanh Kim and Bản Phùng villages, where Topas Ecolodge stands on its ridge above Bản Lếch.

Who is Bản Hồ for?

Travellers with two or three nights to spare who want to finish a trek somewhere warm, swim, cycle between hamlets and sleep in a Tày house on stilts; families, and anyone escaping the fog of the town in winter. It is not for a quick overnight: the drive is long, there is no public bus, and the road can be slippery after heavy rain (works to restore it followed the storms of September 2025). Homestays here have hosted trekkers since the 2000s, with around thirty houses in the village offering rooms; expect mattresses on the wooden floor, shared bathrooms, meals of river fish and bamboo shoots, and prices in the same range as Tả Van. Topas Ecolodge, 45 minutes from Sapa town by its own shuttle, is the other end of the scale: 50 bungalows, infinity pools, the Rice Spa with Red Dao herbal baths and four restaurants, listed among National Geographic's Unique Lodges of the World and Condé Nast Traveler's top three resorts in Asia in the 2025 Readers' Choice Awards. Nậm Cang Riverside Lodge, often mentioned with Bản Hồ, is in the neighbouring Mường Bo commune.

What is there to do?

Swim in the river pools from April to September, walk to the "Jumping Fish" waterfall on the La Ve stream, soak in the natural hot springs, cycle or walk through the Tày hamlets of Xéo Trung Hồ and Tả Trung Hồ, and arrive on foot at the end of the three-day trek Lao Chải – Tả Van – Giàng Tả Chải – Sử Pán – Bản Hồ. Entry to the village costs about 40,000 VND per adult.

How do you get to Bản Hồ?

By private car or tour minibus from Sapa in about 1.5 hours; by motorbike on a mostly paved but winding road; or on foot over two or three days through the Mường Hoa valley. Topas Ecolodge runs its own transfers from Sapa town.

When to go

April to June and September to October are the best months, with warm water and clear days; July and August are hot and wet in the valley; December to February is mild compared with Sapa but the river is cold.
