Rugged scenic beauty and culturally diverse people come together when you visit Sapa (also spelt Sa Pa), a picturesque village in the north-western mountains of Vietnam. Home to many hill tribes, this hamlet lies on the Hoang Lien Son mountain range near the Chinese border, known as the Tonkinese Alps.

Sapa almost seems frozen in time because of its isolated position. Its lush vegetation and the old way of life that still prevails here add to this feeling. The recent surge in its popularity, however, has brought many tourists to the city. The areas around Sapa are worth exploring at leisure for their lingering serenity. The view is stunning, provided the weather gods are in an agreeable mood. There are many vantage points, especially in the Ham Rong Resort that was built with tourists in mind. The resort, at a walking distance from the central square, also has several restaurants and gardens with exquisite plants and flowers on display. Do make it a point to catch the dance performances of the hill people here.
While vendors offering traditional clothes can be bothersome at times in the city, you can meet members of the hill tribes in the mountains. Their women folk make the ethnic garments and chatting with them can be quite a learning experience. Prominent hill tribes in the area are the Hmong and the Dao.
Life is hard in the region and children often have to peddle goods to earn a living. They sell anything that can be bought - small metal or silver trinkets, embroidered pillow cases, friendship bands etc. They often have to walk for as much as three hours to reach the town and trudge back to their village on foot, unless they have made something extra and can afford the ‘luxury' of taking a motorcycle ride back to the village.
Among the children, lack of education and poverty contribute to less nutrition (only one meal a day) and early marriages, especially of the girl-child and more so if she is pretty. The sight of 20-year-old mothers of two is, unfortunately, not uncommon.
Sapa is for the travel purists, with astonishing mountain vistas and the equally captivating hilltribe peoples. High on the independent traveler's "must see" list, accommodation in Sapa during the summer season can be difficult to find without a reservation.
